Opening from On This Site - Native Long Island

Adam (Achitteronose)

Adam, also identified as Achitteronose, was a seventeenth-century western Long Island and Massapequa-associated bilingual envoy. Adam's record shows that Native diplomacy depended on people who could work across languages, communities, and colonial governments. His story preserves western Long Island Native agency in communication, treaty-making, and land negotiation during a period of intense pressure.
