Wantagh High School: Indigenous Mascot Debate

Wantagh’s ongoing Warrior-name dispute connects school identity with Native calls for respectful representation. In February 2026, the district announced a compliance extension to June 2027. A student newspaper’s disagreement over the Wantagh mascot brings Indigenous representation into an everyday public institution. Reading that debate alongside Native Nations’ recorded support for change connects school traditions with the people those traditions claim to represent. On February 13, 2023, sports editor Michelle Smith argued in Wantagh High School’s The Warrior that Indigenous mascots should be retired. Her opinion article also described petitions and social-media opposition within the school community. 1 Wantagh High School signage displaying “Home of the Warriors” and a Native-head mascot, photographed September 12, 2026.
