Seapoose (Meacox Bay Inlet)

Seapoose names inlets opened through the south-side beaches of East Hampton and Southampton, especially the inlet between Meacox Bay and the ocean. Southampton records describe work at the seapoose and local disputes over the inlet and mill. The word later survived in the coastal term sea-puss. Seapoose is translated as "little river," from related Algonquian forms for a small river or inlet. Why Place Names Matter “Naming a sacred place without the involvement and input of the people who originally deemed it sacred does not honor them or give them adequate recognition.” — Angelo Baca, The Power of Bears Ears and Indigenous Place Names (2021), interview statement
