Patuckquapaug, located on the edge of what is now known as Round Pond in Sag Harbor, was once a village site for what was likely a subgroup of the Shinnecock. Although the original Indigenous name for the village at Round Pond was lost to history and replaced with the borrowed term Patuckquapaug, the archaeological presence of an Shinnecock settlement here remains undeniable. Remembering these historically unrecorded habitation sites ensures that the deep Native footprint in bustling modern villages like Sag Harbor is not erased by the gaps in colonial documentation.
