Mattawommax (Probable Fireplace Meadow)

Mattawommax named a meadow locality in Brookhaven. Brookhaven's early town records place John Thompson's numbered meadow share in the 1664 Old Purchase at South, the landscape now associated with Brookhaven Hamlet, Bellport, and Fireplace Neck; the marker is a broad probable placement rather than an identified lot boundary. Mattawommax preserves a Native name within the salt-meadow geography that drew Setauket proprietors to Brookhaven's south shore. Linking the deed to the Old Purchase at South makes the record visible while the probable label keeps a numbered colonial share from being mistaken for an exact recovered Native boundary. Tooker cited a March 2, 1685 deed in which John Thompson transferred his share of meadow at Mattawommax to John Pallmer.
